Mississippi Senator Trent "Suing the Insurance Company for my house that was destroyed by Katrina" Lott will announce he is 'resigning' (to spend more time with family????) from the Senate by the end of the year. Or maybe it is really because his wife would turn into a pillar of salt after all his lies and corruption gets investigated.

MSNBC reports:
NBC News has learned that Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., the minority whip is in the midst of informing close allies that he plans to resign his senate seat before the end of the year. It's possible a formal announcement of his plans could take place as early as today.
Lott's office initially denied that he he would step down, but subsequent requests for information about his plans went unanswered.
While the exactly reason Lott is stepping down before he finishes his term is unknown, the general speculation is that a quick departure immunizes Lott against tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year. That law would require Senators to wait two-years before entering the lucrative world of lobbying Congress
No not more time with family -- unless his family is the K Street crooks put in place by Tom Delay.
Lott was the brainiac who said that this country would have been better off if Strom Thurmond (who ran as a segragationist in 1948) won the presidency. Lott was forced to resign as Senate Majority Leader after that remark, paving the way for cat-killer and tax-evader Bill Frist to become Senate Majority Leader.
Aren't we proud of our Senate?
Funny as much as I detest Lott, I don't loathe him as much as others (McConnell, Inhofe et. al.) --- since Lott totally despises George Bush -- and for that he gets a couple of points.

Maybe he'll write a book about how fucked up it has all been and how he wants to expose it now. Lord knows ya can't do the right thing, be a republican, and hold office all at the same time
Pure sleaze. I should have read you before I put up my own post on Lott, as you said it better than I did.
Lott knows he's not going to be able to cash in on his retirement if he doesn't get out now. Bush's slime is beginning to stick on all of them now and they won't be able to leave with their legacy in tact (as if it has been for the last 7 years).
I say good riddance to the asshole.
The rats.
The ship.
The sinking.
The stink.
Wow.
Good riddance to yet another criminal. I think you've hit the nail on the head re the lobbying restrictions; Lott's never been one to let ethics get in the way of making a few million. A-hole.
Bye Trent, I wish we never knew ye.
Great minds, DC. :-)
Good riddance to a racist pig.
McConnell & Inhofe are terrible, but I still loathe Ted Stevens most of all.
They seem to be leaving the ship like rats and just think, Haster started this run.
The fire has finally become to hot in the kitchen for these criminals.
I think his leaving was a trade off. He goes to work lobbying for Allstate and they rebuild his house.
It sure must be nice to be "in good hands".
Lott is one of the few senators who isn't a gazillionaire, so I guess he figured he had to jump now to get some bucks. But unless I'm mistaken, doesn't he have to wait a year (rather than two) before he can start lobbying? Even with the democratic leadership fucking up, the democrats are bound to control at least the congress, so who does he think he will lobby? Color me confused.
And Larry Flint may have had a say in it.
